THE CUSTOMER

FRAMATOME Paimboeuf is part of FRAMATOME group.

Framatome is an international leader in nuclear energy recognized for its innovative solutions and value-added technologies for the global nuclear fleet. With worldwide expertise and a proven track record for reliability and performance, the company designs, services and installs components, fuel, and instrumentation and control systems for nuclear power plants.

FRAMATOME is also a designer and supplier of nuclear steam supply system and nuclear equipment, services and fuel for high levels of safety and performance. Its more than 14,000 employees working every day to help Framatome’s customers supply ever cleaner, safer and more economical low-carbon energy.

FRAMATOME Paimboeuf site covers an area of more than 36,000m² for a covered area of 13,000m² which employs more than 420 people.

Its main activity is the rolling of sheath tubes and guide tubes, the transformation of zirconium bars from Ugine intended for plug bars manufacture. The plant’s activity is organized into two workshops, Thermal Chemical Lamination and Laboratory Control Finishing.

THE EXPECTATIONS

FRAMATOME Paimboeuf site was previously illuminated with 250W SHP luminaires representing 694 lamps. With the lamps reaching their commercialization end and no longer meeting the expectations of the site, their managers and teams, the lighting needed to be redesigned. The Elec Atlantique St Nazaire (ETN) and Tungsram partnership took an interest in FRAMATOME Paimboeuf project to reshape this industrial site lighting.

Employees’ well-being and safety as well as the possible energy savings with LED technology were the main motivations for this site to switch from traditional technology to Tungsram LED technology. The desire to modernize and bring renewal to the site was also part of FRAMATOME Paimboeuf’s wishes. An ROI calculation has been done internally at FRAMATOME using our technical datas to determine realistic and achievable objectives.

THE SOLUTION

There were two stages:  the first part of the installation was carried out with the ABV luminaire from GE, noted for its three main advantages: an excellent LPW ratio up to 130 lm/W, its 77,000 hours L85 long life and its flexibility to adjust the opening angle to suit the needs of each site.

The ABV1 was then replaced by Tungsram HighBay luminaire, a new range dedicated to industrial sites such as warehouses, factories, storage areas, among others. The HighBay IP20 is an LED luminaire designed and developed for high bays (warehouse, factory, gymnasium, etc.). It is designed and manufactured in Hungary in one of our main Tungsram factories. The range offers high lumen packages between 10,000 and 60,000 lumens. In Framatome case, only 141W enough with Tungsram HighBay for 20 000 lumens, ensuring a 175 lm/W lighting efficiency.

The luminaire optical part is protected against dust (IP50), while the entire luminaire is protected against shocks with an IK08, even IK10 to better fit most challenging conditions such in sport halls. The color temperature chosen in this precise case is 4,000 Kelvin, CRI80 with a clear optic diffuser. With this range, it is also possible to associate another control mode, with Dali option or with motion and light detector or even with Nedap Luxon IoT Node solution. Different choices of powers and optics are also available (see technical sheet or contact us). From now on, on Framatome site, the rolling zone is equipped with ABV1, the thermal zone is equipped with ABVG2, and finally the finishing control zone is equipped with HighBay IP20.

RESULTS AND BENEFITS

Once the first part of the installation was completed, the luminaires were immediately adopted and approved by the employees. The “daylight” result within the factory has been noticed by the employees who highlighted the positive effect of lighting thanks to Tungsram HighBay: less eyestrain and headaches for more comfort at work. The site management team and the employees are very careful and organized about safety measures related to risks on the workplace. HighBay IP20 solution confirms this rule and complete the process.

It is important to notice that our products have been validated by the site’s “visual control and metrology” for a significant test. The ROI calculation made it possible to determine a precise result of expected savings over the first year, around 80,000 to 100,000 €. These are considerable savings, especially on such a large site, operating 24/7.

Reimagining the lighting of an industrial site can represent a huge challenge; employees’ well-being and health are priorities for companies, particularly within NF EN 12464-1 standard framework for lighting of workplaces. This standard is the most important one to comply with on sites like FRAMATOME Paimboeuf one where accident risks may be higher than other site types.
