Tungsram is donating protective face shields and lighting products to Beirut, Lebanon helping rebuilding the city after the devastating explosion in the port of the city in August.

As the whole world saw it in the news, a large amount of ammonium nitrate stored at the port of the city of Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, exploded in August, causing at least 190 deaths and 6,500 injuries. The damage is estimated 10–15 billion USD in properties and leaving an estimated 300,000 people homeless.

Tungsram decided to donate 2,000 of its own produced protective face shields that can be used both in emergency work and healthcare. These products provide extra protection against germs, including COVID-19. The face shields are already in use in Beirut.

Tungsram is also sending 5,000 lighting products (LED’s, bulbs), and is currently looking for partners that could distribute them among institutions or people in need.

President & CEO of Tungsram, Joerg Bauer met H.E. Ms Joanna Azzi, the Lebanese ambassador to Budapest, to formally and symbolically hand over some of the face shields and express his care for the rebuilding of the area.

‘Tungsram teams have been in the Middle East including Lebanon for more than 100 years and today Tungsram is a synonym for light, quality and innovation’, Mr. Bauer said. ‘As a team we feel a strong bond to our long-term partners. I personally have been in Lebanon many times, so it is natural that now, not as business people but as fellow humans, we try to support the people in Lebanon in this tragedy as much as we can.’

Earlier, this year after the spring earthquake in Zagred, Croatia, Tungsram also helped the reconstruction of the capital of Hungary’s neighboring country with a donation of lamps.
