The Client

With a long history, Ganz Ábrahám Technical School in Zalaegerszeg prepares students for several professions. Applicants can choose from various courses such as mechanical engineering, informatics, law enforcement, transport and logistics, specialized machine and vehicle manufacturing, or industrial informatics in the field of electronics.

As part of the high-quality program besides the theoretical education students also learn to use high-value tools, which require high concentration and good visual conditions. Tungsram assisted in modernizing school luminaires with its latest lighting solutions.

The requirements

Proper lighting condition is essential in schools since good lighting does not only provide good vision but creates pleasant lighting climate, which has an impact on mental condition and concentration. The right lighting solution has a positive influence on the performance of intellectual activities and on the general well-being of both students and teachers.

Students at the Ganz School work with special tools and machines, which are essential in the future both in their chosen profession and their studies. Lighting conditions designed not only to enhance their expertise, but also to create the perfect visual comfort that meets with health and safety requirements.

Main goals of lighting modernization were to simplify user interaction, increase energy efficiency, minimize maintenance costs, and improve sustainability, which is now a basic requirement in the most lighting project. Tungsram products fulfilled this need, by replacing the previously used LFL fluorescent lamps, energy costs can be reduced up to 60%.

The solution

Today’s ideal classroom lighting is based on exclusively LED technology, which is very energy efficient and environmentally friendly. Uniform light distribution, flicker-free and natural color rendering are the main advantages of LED lighting. Being a participant of the Bright-Smart-School government program, nearly 600 new LED luminaires were installed at the school, including Tungsram’s LED Bulkhead, LED Mariner, LED Panel and LED board lighting products.

Based on the preliminary on-site survey, Tungsram’s experts proposed smart Helvar lighting control solutions, caring out the first large-scale project between Tungsram and Helvar.

Helvar ActiveAhead, is a self-learning predictive system. By integrating it into Tungsram LED fixtures, It tracks and stores usage and movement habits of the users, creates samples, and based on the data, optimizes the settings of the lamps, also considering actual external lighting conditions. the solution allows an even more efficient energy usage and reduction of operational costs. DALI-controlled luminaires, board lighting and projector controller have also been installed in the school's main lecturer. Helvar’s DIGIDIM wired system allows to create preset scenes, speeding up the preparation of the auditorium for various uses.

Several classrooms have been equipped with motion and light sensor integrated luminaires to obtain more accurate data. As the equipment of the rooms is not constant- it is arranged depending on the teacher and the course in the rooms- Helvar’s high degree of adaptability is a great help, as it can perfectly adapt to changes in lighting conditions and movements and automatically adjusts its various settings. During the construction, built-in wireless multifunctional switches were installed, perfectly replacing the previous conventional switches and simplifying lighting control by using preset scenes. The automatic operation of the system facilitates the daily routine of school staff as well as students, by eliminating the need to deal with lighting control.

The results

Optimized lighting consumes significantly less energy, which reduces the school’s operating costs, thus contributing to sustainability and reducing the ecological footprint. In addition to Tungsram’s luminaires and to Helvar smart solution controls, the school's annual energy consumption can be reduced by further 60% in the rooms equipped with light and motion sensors, compared to LED fixtures without sensors. In addition to reducing energy costs, it is important to mention that the lighting values in the different rooms increased by 15-30%.
